The Good, The Bad, The Spoilers: Alice in Zombieland

*sigh* I think this is the first book I’ve had to read for school this year that I just hated…

If anyone had told Alice Bell that her entire life would change course between one heartbeat and the next, she would have laughed. From blissful to tragic, innocent to ruined? Please. But that’s all it took. One heartbeat. A blink, a breath, a second, and everything she knew and loved was gone.

Her father was right. The monsters are real.

To avenge her family, Ali must learn to fight the undead. To survive, she must learn to trust the baddest of the bad boys, Cole Holland. But Cole has secrets of his own, and if Ali isn’t careful, those secrets might just prove to be more dangerous than the zombies. – summary

As my first line implies, I had to read this for my YA lit class and gosh it was such a disappointment. I went in expecting a kinda light hearted and fun read about someone hunting zombies with some Alice in Wonderland aspects thrown in. But what did I get? Um a typical YA high school drama full of obnoxious tropes with some occasional zombie fighting and little to no mention of Alice in Wonderland.

Hahahahahahaaha. No I really didn’t like this book.

Ali was SUCH a Mary Sue… IS THERE ANYTHING SHE ISN’T MAGICALLY GOOD AT? NOT ONLY does she catch the eye of two popular and hot guys on her first day at a new school… BUT BOTH OF THESE GUYS ARE INVOLVED WITH THIS STUPID ZOMBIE HUNTING RING…? Oh and of course both of those guys are just HEAD OVER HEELS for her. And they JUST SO HAPPEN to be mortal enemies bc OOOO they had a falling out in the past and just ugh

I HATE the bad boy trope! I’m so tired of seeing these stupid bad boys with a heart of gold except Cole doesn’t have a heart of gold (well at least I don’t think he does… the book disagrees) Honestly, I think he’s low key abusive. Yeah, he didn’t do anything outwardly abusive in this novel (unless I forgot) but gosh does he set off major red flags with his stupid overprotective, stalkerish, domineering personality.

If you can’t tell I really hate Cole

Unrelated butttttt Can I have an example of the bad boy trope but with a bad boy that ACTUALLY turns out to be a jerk? It’d be a lot more interesting

I find Justin and his crew much more interesting, I wish the novel would’ve focused more on them

Zombies are put on the backburner for this stupid high school drama

SPEAKING OF HIGH SCHOOL DRAMA! Why does no one in this book speak like an actual teen? NO ONE TALKS LIKE THIS. It comes off like a 40 yr old trying to be cool…

BACK TO THE ZOMBOS! There’s so many stupid rules to how these zombies work… But also, so are zombies in every town? Or have they just infected this one? WHy haven’t more people noticed the zombos? (but then I guess half the town is in on this zombo hunting… idk)(oh and yeah I’m calling them zombos… bc it’s late at night and I don’t care)

AS you can I really wasn’t a fan of this one and I think you’ve heard enough from me. I’m gonna forgo the spoiler section for this one because I don’t really have anything else to say and you’re probably done with me by this point lol.

SO! Have you read Alice in Zombieland? What are some of your favorite zombie stories? Any really good ones I should check out (I’m open to any medium (Film, TV, books, videogames (did someone say The Last of Us?! (Oh gosh now we’re about 3 different sets of parentheses in…)))) Thoughts on the bad boy trope in YA books?

I spend my free time watching Netflix when I should be reading and writing. Then I go online and blog about books and TV shows!
